[2010/01/21 09:05:28] <mmitchell> i have a file that's pushed to the server from one module, but i'd actually like to change the content of the file in a different class. i get an error from puppet client saying that the resource already exists, is there a way to force this?
[2010/01/21 09:06:21] <Disconnect> gotta inherit the module that does the push and override it there. at the end of the day, you need one deterministic source for that file..

[2010/01/21 09:09:08] * Disconnect is currently trying to find a way to untangle an inheritance mess like that. "if its part of the beta environment, it gets this config. unless its also part of the app-foo-test, in which case it gets this one with more memory." etc. its a royal pita.

(and that thing has useless generic error messages) a note in the package desc would have righted me in minutes..
[2010/01/21 09:54:37] <Disconnect> joe-mac: at least you can push out the new defaults file before the package update, if you didn't already do the update..

[2010/01/21 09:55:48] <henk> joe-mac: i was just told that mainly maintainers who cannot ship a sane default config for the service do that to force the admin to configure stuff before the daemon actually starts.

[2010/01/21 09:57:17] <joe-mac> yes, and if like most people you don't have ayuto sign, and it is the first run, there is no valid signed key, so puppet dies unless you have waitforcert

[2010/01/21 10:09:18] <henk> now i'm confused...
[2010/01/21 10:09:22] <henk> but nvm
[2010/01/21 10:09:29] <joe-mac> so now after we've already come to terms with the asshattery of starting daemons when you simple apt-get/aptitude install, now we have an arbitrary defaults file that you also have to set... did debian forget we have had init in unix for you know, longer th an i've been alive probably
[2010/01/21 10:09:41] <Volcane> henk: debian policy is to enable in rc *and* start the daemon during package install
[2010/01/21 10:09:47] <henk> Volcane: ack

[2010/01/21 13:00:22] <fsweetser_> thansen: quite easy - you'd use the file type for that

[2010/01/21 13:07:47] <Volcane> yeah the nodes wake up regularly and fetches new config
[2010/01/21 13:07:48] <thansen> changes in the config that is, not the fs defined in the file
[2010/01/21 13:07:49] <Volcane> its not a push model
[2010/01/21 13:08:13] <Volcane> you get other modes where u can use rsync or whatever to deliver the puppet code and run locally but its not hte norm
[2010/01/21 13:08:31] <thansen> there is no way to send a signal for all to pull though?
[2010/01/21 13:08:48] <Volcane> there's a command puppetrun that can connect to them
[2010/01/21 13:08:58] <Volcane> but doing a run is pretty cpu intensive both on the client and the master
[2010/01/21 13:09:10] <Volcane> so u need to stagger them if you have a number of machines
[2010/01/21 13:09:25] <thansen> ok, I want to be able to up php code and keep it in sync immediately
[2010/01/21 13:09:42] <Volcane> puppet is more in the space of configuring vhosts and apache

[2010/01/21 13:11:58] <Volcane> or can they stagger and say within 30 minutes all run it

[2010/01/21 15:24:33] <himynameisthor> i noticed puppet started running especially slowly after i had it ensuring homedirs were recursively owned by the correct user. the debug output looks like it's doing the equivalent of a find, then chowning individual files. is there any way to override that behavior to just call chown -R?
[2010/01/21 15:25:04] <KarlHungus> jbooth: right, i'll check, i'm just a bit concerned about things ending up heavily coupled

[2010/01/21 16:26:44] <fsweetser> now I just have to go through and verify the generated stuff against the previously existing rules that have accreted over time
[2010/01/21 16:27:09] <lwhalen> dare I ask how big a given WPI ruleset is? :-p
[2010/01/21 16:27:14] <lwhalen> I can only imagine...
[2010/01/21 16:27:20] <jbooth> KarlHungus: I had a solution like that that worked, but it isn't pretty -- one of my goals is to be able to "yum remove puppet" and have the system look sane to a new administrator. And the "leftovers" from the fragments are *not* sane and likely to confuse.
[2010/01/21 16:27:34] <fsweetser> it's not that bad, really - these are just the host firewall rules for our handful of servers
[2010/01/21 16:27:42] <lwhalen> ahh ok
[2010/01/21 16:27:55] <Volcane> jbooth: if u put the fragments in like /var/lib/puppet/somewhere it should not be too confusing at least?

[2010/01/21 16:28:53] <KarlHungus> the new admin should only see the resulting concat'ed file
[2010/01/21 16:29:15] <fsweetser> I created an /etc/sysconfig/iptables.d, so it should at least give the new admin a strong hint what's going on =)
[2010/01/21 16:29:25] <Volcane> yeah same

[2010/01/21 16:29:53] <Volcane> so it ran every run?
[2010/01/21 16:30:06] <jbooth> fsweetser: but not when the machine has left my control... and thus is de-puppeted. Now they edit something in iptables.d and magically it never updates the system. Then they come whine at me. :-P

[2010/01/21 16:30:26] <KarlHungus> tmp is periodically flushed anyhow if the system hasn't disabled that cron job
[2010/01/21 16:30:30] <jbooth> Volcane: yep. But it did smart things with cat to generate a file which it tried to copy, checksummed, and found equal, so did nothing.
[2010/01/21 16:30:40] <fsweetser> jbooth: true, it's not a perfect solution, though we don't have to worry about that particular case here
[2010/01/21 16:31:02] <KarlHungus> well, thats why i like what volcane said about putting fragments in /var/lib/puppet
[2010/01/21 16:31:11] <jbooth> fsweetser: Some of my rules and constraints are very strange, but that's the nature of my group. :-)
[2010/01/21 16:31:21] <KarlHungus> have yum remove puppet rm that dir and no fragments are left to find. just the final concat'ed file
[2010/01/21 16:31:31] <Volcane> since puppet now has regex i was going to put them like /some/obvious/puppet/related/place/etc_sysconfig_iptables.d

[2010/01/21 16:36:16] <uphillian> cool
[2010/01/21 16:36:18] <jbooth> Also the puppet->aug interface is ... cumbersome. Aug really wants you to be able to do things like, you know, loop. Or count.

[2010/01/21 16:36:26] <fsweetser> ls /files/etc/sysconfig/iptables/table/ produces results
[2010/01/21 16:36:28] <jbooth> It wasn't designed for a declaritive control language
[2010/01/21 16:36:38] <KarlHungus> it would be quite interesting to have puppet generate all of its conf files in a tmp location and diff them against the existing configs. sort of a 'dry-run' mode where you can inspect things manually (or via diff, etc) for major differences
[2010/01/21 16:37:11] <fsweetser> KarlHungus: 0.25.4 had some pre and post transaction hooks that might do that
[2010/01/21 16:37:27] <fsweetser> look for the mention about etckeeper integration
[2010/01/21 16:38:05] <fsweetser> jbooth: I'm of the opinion that, rather than trying to shoehorn everything into the augeas native type, there should be more native types that leverage augeas
[2010/01/21 16:38:31] <fsweetser> that way, you could have things like an iptables or sudoers native type that works with purge => true to clean out unmanaged entries
[2010/01/21 16:38:55] <jbooth> That could actually work since your type can actually do things like loop
[2010/01/21 16:39:02] <fsweetser> exactly
[2010/01/21 16:39:25] <jbooth> but trying to purge a particular rule out of iptables using only puppet defines of the augeas type... you'd be insane.
[2010/01/21 16:39:29] <fsweetser> the augeas functionality is great, but the augeas type is a pretty thin layer for anything complex
[2010/01/21 16:39:34] <jbooth> which is of course what I want to do.
[2010/01/21 16:39:38] <fsweetser> =)
[2010/01/21 16:39:57] <jbooth> well, one of the things I want to do
[2010/01/21 16:40:10] <fsweetser> it's clunky but doable with the concat files pattern and a frag directory with purge => true
[2010/01/21 16:40:15] <uphillian> @fsweetser what version of augeas?
[2010/01/21 16:40:17] <jbooth> Though with the changes to iptables on F12 I'm getting close to just stomping all over everything with my own rules.
[2010/01/21 16:40:36] <fsweetser> 0.5.3
[2010/01/21 16:40:41] <jbooth> 0.6.0-2 works at least. (F12 package)

[2010/01/21 16:41:53] <fsweetser> ah, that's why - it's a backport build, so probably not quite stock
[2010/01/21 16:42:03] <jbooth> fsweetser: you know how redhat puts all rules in RH-FIREWALL-1 or whatever?

[2010/01/21 16:42:41] <KarlHungus> completely automating that should require some manual interaction
[2010/01/21 16:43:05] <jbooth> So now you need to case each iptables rule to know about RH-FW and straight chains. Bleh.

[2010/01/21 17:08:50] <Djelibeybi> KarlHungus: yeah, ordering is interesting. I've found it took us a while to get it mostly OK
[2010/01/21 17:09:06] <Djelibeybi> We don't have any errors, but it usually takes 2-3 puppet runs for a full successful manifest implementation
[2010/01/21 17:10:45] <KarlHungus> i snapshotted a node right before the initial puppet run, and i'm just running, fixing, revert to snapshot, repeat until its right
[2010/01/21 17:11:12] <Djelibeybi> Yeah, we do the same with VMs in testing
[2010/01/21 17:11:23] <pheezy> what's splay? i dont' see anything about it in puppetd manpage
[2010/01/21 17:11:26] <uphillian> @djelibeybi my ordering issues are usually yum, you need the first run to get the repos installed so that the second run can actually install the packages
[2010/01/21 17:11:41] <uphillian> @pheezy splay = random delay in starting the run
[2010/01/21 17:11:45] <Djelibeybi> uphillian: indeed. We're now moving to having a "bootstrap" environment
[2010/01/21 17:11:46] <jb> jhp: you can specify an entire directory
[2010/01/21 17:11:57] <jb> jhp use file { recurse => true }
[2010/01/21 17:12:11] <Djelibeybi> uphillian: so, the VMs are built with puppet set to "bootstrap", which installs the Yum repos and other base stuff. Finally, switches Puppet's environment to "production"
[2010/01/21 17:12:21] <jb> jhp: file { "/etc/bleh": recurse => true } rather..
[2010/01/21 17:12:21] <Djelibeybi> Then, the next run does all the production manifest deployments

[2010/01/21 17:12:56] <Djelibeybi> Volcane: we've built a POC in development for this, but it'll take a while to get it into production (which Just Works(tm) at the moment)

[2010/01/21 17:13:30] <Djelibeybi> We create 200-300 VMs in development a week, so it's way more important to streamline stuff
[2010/01/21 17:14:11] <KarlHungus> although, my bootstrapped node has been templated =) so i sually just deploy new ones off that template
[2010/01/21 17:14:33] <jb> what does the bootstrap environment really get you though?
[2010/01/21 17:15:02] <KarlHungus> jb: the basic services and resources you need to build production stuff on top of
[2010/01/21 17:15:06] <Volcane> sorts out chicken and egg things
[2010/01/21 17:15:16] <Volcane> like need facts setup to be able to compile entire manifest
[2010/01/21 17:15:18] <Djelibeybi> jb: the ability to configure stuff before the app-facing network comes up. Which is good for us for security
[2010/01/21 17:15:21] <KarlHungus> snmp, munin-node, facts, etc
[2010/01/21 17:15:22] <Volcane> small bootstrap environment sets up those fact
[2010/01/21 17:15:37] <Djelibeybi> We use Puppet to configure DMZ/app-facing network interfaces. So, kickstart only configures management networking.
[2010/01/21 17:15:46] <Volcane> or prepare yum environments completely before doing the rest which makes over all manifest better
[2010/01/21 17:15:48] <Djelibeybi> Which means if it all fails, the machine is not visible to untrusted networks
[2010/01/21 17:16:15] <jb> i guess my process is a little different.. I kickstart a box, which drops down a script named "puppetconf" to the host, I then manually run "puppetconf -e <environment>".. this script installs puppet if its missing, configures /etc/sysconfig/puppet if needed, sets the evironment, and does a puppet run..
[2010/01/21 17:16:24] <pheezy> hmm i've been wondering how if I should puppet manage my network interface aliases; sounds like i should look into it more
[2010/01/21 17:16:46] <jb> a freshly kickstarted box doesn't have anything.. its vanilla.
[2010/01/21 17:16:56] <uphillian> @jb sounds like the right way to do it
[2010/01/21 17:17:19] <jb> Djelibeybi: ahh, we have no "app-facing" network.
[2010/01/21 17:17:44] <jb> our production servers typically have one interface
[2010/01/21 17:18:12] <Volcane> jb: there's a lot of weird chiecken and eggs with puppet
[2010/01/21 17:18:32] <Volcane> jb: if u dont install cron *before* puppet runs, the ting wont even compile if there are cronjobs in the manifest
[2010/01/21 17:18:37] <Volcane> jb: bootstraps help with that
[2010/01/21 17:18:38] <Djelibeybi> jb: heh. Our production servers have a minimum of 8 NICs, four bonds, and 3-7 VLAN assignments
[2010/01/21 17:18:41] <jb> uphillian: and as soon as puppet is started, it contacts foreman via reports, and adds the deviced automatically.. all I have to do is login to foreman/dashboard and set its "host-group," and its configured 20 seconds later.
[2010/01/21 17:18:53] <uphillian> nice
[2010/01/21 17:18:55] <jb> Volcane: well, yes, cron is part of my base.
[2010/01/21 17:19:05] <Volcane> jb: its an example, lots of similar ones
[2010/01/21 17:19:11] <jb> but yeah, I can see where that would be a problem..
[2010/01/21 17:19:15] <jb> which a bootstrap environment would solve

[2010/01/21 17:25:12] <roede> hey, does anyone know off the top of their heads if there is a way to define a directory prefix for the user type, i.e. "/home" or "/export/home" depending on the $os?

[2010/01/21 17:25:33] <brd> roede: os case statment
[2010/01/21 17:26:11] <roede> how would you concatenate "/home/" with the user name in the type then?
[2010/01/21 17:26:25] <KarlHungus> roede: write a fact for it
[2010/01/21 17:26:33] <Djelibeybi> roede: path => "/home/${name}" ?
[2010/01/21 17:26:34] <Volcane> you se a case statement or selector to set $homedir
[2010/01/21 17:26:35] <KarlHungus> $home/$user
[2010/01/21 17:26:39] <Volcane> then you specify tht to user
[2010/01/21 17:26:55] <roede> ideally, i want to be able to say user { homedir => $homedir/$user }
[2010/01/21 17:27:38] <roede> ive got a selector already, just wanted to know the syntax on "concatenation" in puppet/ruby/whatever
[2010/01/21 17:27:52] <Volcane> "$foo/$bar"
[2010/01/21 17:27:57] <roede> KarlHungus: so that is valid? great. ill do that
[2010/01/21 17:27:59] <Volcane> "${foo}${bar}
[2010/01/21 17:28:14] <KarlHungus> roede: well, $home won't exist until you have a fact
[2010/01/21 17:28:28] <KarlHungus> but if its just dependent on the $operatingsystem, then you don't need a custom fact
[2010/01/21 17:28:30] <roede> i didnt know if quoting would mess things up, as i dont know any ruby
[2010/01/21 17:28:39] <roede> yes, its just on oper.sys

[2010/01/21 22:49:52] <agaffney> I put together 2 scripts: one to ssh to every box, run crontab -l, parse the entries, and insert them into a mysql database
[2010/01/21 22:50:09] <agaffney> and then another to write out a manifest file with all of the cron entries
[2010/01/21 22:50:20] <agaffney> both scripts work quite well
[2010/01/21 22:50:34] <agaffney> I just need to put together a web interface for managing the jobs in mysql
[2010/01/21 22:50:58] <ohadlevy> agaffney: why not using puppet?

[2010/01/21 22:51:36] <ohadlevy> to manage the cron entries
[2010/01/21 22:51:47] <agaffney> I *am* using puppet to actually manage the crontab
[2010/01/21 22:51:51] <agaffney> based on the entries in mysql
[2010/01/21 22:52:10] <ohadlevy> ah, ok
[2010/01/21 22:52:11] <agaffney> my second script regenerates the puppet manifest with the cron entries based on the mysql data
[2010/01/21 22:52:24] <ohadlevy> why dont you use a puppet function to query your db directly?
[2010/01/21 22:52:37] <agaffney> hmm, I suppose I could
[2010/01/21 22:52:47] <agaffney> I've just never messed with custom puppet functions
[2010/01/21 22:53:02] <agaffney> and I hardly know any ruby
[2010/01/21 22:53:15] <ohadlevy> i do something similar in foreman,
[2010/01/21 22:54:30] <agaffney> I'll make it so that jobs can never be "deleted"
[2010/01/21 22:54:33] <agaffney> just enabled/disabled
[2010/01/21 22:54:44] <agaffney> which will toggle ensure => present/absent in the generated manifest
[2010/01/21 22:55:24] <agaffney> to make it harder for jobs to get "lost"
[2010/01/21 22:55:39] <ohadlevy> i think a function would be cleaner, as you wont have to deal with commiting the manifest etc
[2010/01/21 22:55:45] <agaffney> I still have no idea how to prevent someone from editing the crontab locally on the server
[2010/01/21 22:55:52] <agaffney> probably
[2010/01/21 22:55:55] <ohadlevy> cron.allow?
[2010/01/21 22:56:12] <agaffney> we have 6 users who have full access to all of our servers
[2010/01/21 22:56:13] <Djelibeybi> agaffney: cron.deny and cron.allow
[2010/01/21 22:56:25] <agaffney> now, all of them *should* know better
[2010/01/21 22:56:28] <agaffney> but mistakes can happen
[2010/01/21 22:56:40] <ohadlevy> but if you dont allow people to change it, so why bother to keep it in a db, just extract it one time into a manifest
[2010/01/21 22:56:48] <Djelibeybi> echo ALL >> /etc/cron.deny
[2010/01/21 22:56:57] <Djelibeybi> echo user >> /etc/cron.allow
[2010/01/21 22:57:10] <agaffney> Djelibeybi: but then puppet can't manage the crontab
[2010/01/21 22:57:12] @ jcape joined channel #puppet
[2010/01/21 22:57:21] <Djelibeybi> agaffney: echo root >> /etc/cron.allow
[2010/01/21 22:57:31] <Djelibeybi> (Puppet runs as root -- you'd need to add the users that puppet will add cronjobs as)
[2010/01/21 22:57:38] <agaffney> Djelibeybi: and that defeats the purpose, since all 6 people have sudo access
[2010/01/21 22:57:45] <Djelibeybi> Fair enough
[2010/01/21 22:58:11] <agaffney> ohadlevy: because I'm the only one in our ops team that *really* knows puppet
[2010/01/21 22:58:16] <agaffney> there's one other guy that "kinda" knows it
[2010/01/21 22:58:21] <agaffney> and the other 4 have never touched it
[2010/01/21 22:59:57] <agaffney> also, doing it in the DB allows me to keep a "change history" with comments and timestamps for each change
[2010/01/21 23:00:20] <agaffney> my puppet stuff is in git, but I can't get the other guy to commit his changes
[2010/01/21 23:00:24] <agaffney> I have to go back and do it afterwards
[2010/01/21 23:02:07] <agaffney> is it possible to write a puppet function that will generate a bunch of 'cron' resources?
[2010/01/21 23:03:01] <ohadlevy> i think so
[2010/01/21 23:04:14] <agaffney> I'll have to look into that
