[2011/10/27 00:04:42] <fragfutter> and how is your puppetmaster serving its files?

[2011/10/27 01:03:54] <bencc> _rc: it just didn't show any indication that it's working
[2011/10/27 01:04:05] <bencc> and it's stuck on: wait4(3518,
[2011/10/27 01:04:14] <_rc> not that weird. about half the 'hangs' our devs report are a lack of patience
[2011/10/27 01:04:52] <bencc> I have patience :) but I didn't see any output for several minuts right after executing apply
[2011/10/27 01:05:13] <_rc> so, did facter run cleanly?
[2011/10/27 01:05:13] <bencc> I'm used to see some output. at least one puppet command saying that it is starting
[2011/10/27 01:05:55] <bencc> _rc: facter also hangs
[2011/10/27 01:06:15] <bencc> do I need to run it with sudo or just facter?
[2011/10/27 01:06:22] <_rc> cool. that reduces the scope.
[2011/10/27 01:06:40] <bencc> but it's possible that puppet is still running in the background
[2011/10/27 01:06:42] <bencc> I'm not sure
[2011/10/27 01:06:47] <_rc> I'd expect you to run it with the same permissions as puppet
[2011/10/27 01:06:55] <bencc> let me start from fresh
[2011/10/27 01:06:59] @ kenneho joined channel #puppet
[2011/10/27 01:07:13] <bencc> I'll load the vbox image again and run facter
[2011/10/27 01:07:30] <_rc> puppet's startup is roughly, talk to master for pluginsync, run facter, talk to master for catalog, apply catalog, report
[2011/10/27 01:07:59] <_rc> and what you're seeing hang is some of the subprocess stuff that facter is doing
[2011/10/27 01:08:13] <bencc> _rc: I'm using puppet locally without a master
[2011/10/27 01:08:24] <bencc> just with "puppet apply"
[2011/10/27 01:08:38] <bencc> it worked in previous puppet version. has anything changed?
[2011/10/27 01:08:48] <_rc> then it's: talk to itself for pluginsync, run facter, compile it's own catalog, apply its own catalog
[2011/10/27 01:08:49] <kenneho> Hi all, does anyone know how to change the default environment to which puppet clients connect to? I've defined multiple environments (production, qass, etc), and would like to tune which environment a puppet client first connect the first time it runs.
[2011/10/27 01:09:34] <bencc> _rc: I have a fresh VM now. I'll just install puppet and run "sudo facter" and see what happens

[2011/10/27 05:05:55] <GioGio> here is the part of my init.pp http://pastebin.com/JeY2fc6H
[2011/10/27 05:06:14] <Volcane> GioGio: puppet:///modules/ib_network/activ_interface.sh
[2011/10/27 05:06:41] <Kritz> I want to chmod the directory to 755, but the file inside the directory to 750 (except for 1 file, which is why I want the directory to be 755)
[2011/10/27 05:07:51] <erthad> Kritz: you can either describe all files in directory with separate resource strings
[2011/10/27 05:08:25] <GioGio> Volcane: thanks, but it still doesn't works :/

[2011/10/27 05:08:41] <Kritz> erthad: is it possible without specifying every single file?
[2011/10/27 05:08:51] <Kritz> erthad:
[2011/10/27 05:08:59] <erthad> or describe "/dir" and "/dir/." both -- in that case puppet will do chmods twice each time it is run
[2011/10/27 05:09:04] <bencc> I'm getting err: /Stage[main]/Reprepro/Exec[reprepro apt-key]: Failed to call refresh: /usr/bin/apt-key: 8: mktemp: not found

[2011/10/27 05:09:26] <bencc> is it an error in the /usr/bin/apt-key script or something related to puppet?
[2011/10/27 05:10:16] <Kritz> erthad: if possible I want to prevent puppet to run chmod every time, but I'm afraid it has to..
[2011/10/27 05:11:16] <GioGio> Volcane: As you can see in the pastebin link, I have a complicated path to my modules because I use some environments and some subdirectory for my modules

[2011/10/27 09:50:49] <joe-mac> ah unless you normally install production services on ytour desktp then install it on your desktop

[2011/10/27 09:53:04] <clustermagnet> google reader… +1
[2011/10/27 09:53:06] <erthad> panfist: write a manifest into some my_manifest.pp, then puppet apply my_manifest.pp
[2011/10/27 09:53:49] <erthad> dan__t_: any application server for ruby might work
[2011/10/27 09:53:58] <dan__t_> hm
[2011/10/27 09:54:34] <erthad> there most used ones are apache/passenger, nginx/mongrel, nginx/thin, nginx/unicorn

[2011/10/27 09:55:58] <dan__t_> I'm not going to use Mongrel.
[2011/10/27 09:56:00] <dan__t_> Mongrel can die in a fire.
[2011/10/27 09:56:26] <erthad> mongrel is intended to use behind a proxy like nginx
[2011/10/27 09:56:37] <dan__t_> right
[2011/10/27 09:56:42] <erthad> however I don't think I ever used it
[2011/10/27 09:56:51] <dan__t_> Thinking back, I've never had Mongrel work like a dream.
[2011/10/27 09:56:57] <dan__t_> What do you use, if I may ask?
[2011/10/27 09:57:07] <dan__t_> I've only known *of* mongrel, behind apache
[2011/10/27 09:57:33] @ Quit: jsurfer: Quit: jsurfer
[2011/10/27 09:58:31] <erthad> I use passenger but I haven't fired puppet into production yet
[2011/10/27 09:59:56] <erthad> I've seen an article on puppetlabs about using nginx/thin for puppet also

[2011/10/27 10:07:46] <agaffney> other than that, not really

[2011/10/27 10:09:47] * agaffney shrugs
[2011/10/27 10:09:59] <sarkis> hmm the initscripts thing is kind of important
[2011/10/27 10:10:09] <sarkis> in case the machine is restarted
[2011/10/27 10:10:13] <paravoid> another question :)

[2011/10/27 10:10:57] <wollviech> agaffney: when you're running 100's of hosts, the absolutely last thing you want is some special way of installing certain packages ;-)

[2011/10/27 10:45:46] <ghanima> Got a question for you
[2011/10/27 10:46:08] <ghanima> I work in a devops group that is responsible for the application tier of our environment and not the server environment
[2011/10/27 10:47:20] <ghanima> Are Admin group who has direct admin access and administers server based components(HW, Virtualization, etc) had puppet deployed to maintain standard configuration files /etc/hosts resolv.conf static routes etc.... We have been thinking about getting access to this however the told us no and stated the following.
[2011/10/27 10:47:24] <agaffney> kenperkins: is there a large file you're managing with puppet?
[2011/10/27 10:47:41] <kenperkins> not off the top of my head, let me look
[2011/10/27 10:47:51] <ghanima> 1)All are changes are checked into SVN and we don't have controlled access to SVN(fixable, but not enabled)
[2011/10/27 10:48:36] <ghanima> 2)Once changes are checked in they have a perl script that takes any updates and combines them into a standard build release which they told us it would be difficult for multiple groups to maintain
[2011/10/27 10:48:52] <agaffney> ghanima: standard build release?
[2011/10/27 10:49:00] <ghanima> 3)Access to push changes from the puppetmaster is not available to non administrative staff
[2011/10/27 10:49:01] <agaffney> ghanima: are you doing masterless?
[2011/10/27 10:49:09] <agaffney> heh, guess not

[2011/10/27 10:50:34] <ghanima> agaffney: To go into Detail.... they have this perl script call tagem. What it does is goes through SVN and tags changes to an identifier and then from the puppermaster polls svn for that tag and bundles all files associated with the project into what they call a release
[2011/10/27 10:51:22] <ghanima> Since puppet is expected to manage infrastructure as a whole I am curious how other users are using puppet from different IT groups... or is Puppet meant to be managed and maintained by one group

[2011/10/27 10:51:51] <agaffney> kenperkins: nothing obvious is jumping out at me. I recommend doing a puppet run through strace to see if you can find out what's going on under the hood
[2011/10/27 10:52:20] <agaffney> ghanima: where I work, ops maintains puppet as a whole, and we allow devs to submit changes through a code review system
[2011/10/27 10:52:33] <agaffney> and we do both system and app level stuff
[2011/10/27 10:53:17] <kenperkins> strace?
[2011/10/27 10:53:39] <ghanima> agaffney: I understand the rationale behind the limitations when puppet was deployed there was never an expectation for other groups like myself to help maintain that environment. The way that they break things up in puppet. Each Appplication product has its own application module. Inside module are all the things neccessary for it to run, a predefined application templates, user account setup directory permissions etc. Some of this is being abstracted out
[2011/10/27 10:54:16] <ghanima> agaffney: So your Sysadmin group is no different than the people responsible for the application correct?
[2011/10/27 10:55:42] <ghanima> agaffney: So when you do your code review do you actually do a puppet --noop on each change that gets inputed into subversion.... Also with each change how do you handle rollback meaning what is your process for rollback and how do you identify in this case a stable configuration

[2011/10/27 19:45:37] <rodjek> so if you have munin installed, it'll put the files in /usr/share/munin
[2011/10/27 19:45:46] <rodjek> if not, it'll just ignore those file resources

[2011/10/27 20:08:05] <walkeran_lappy> Working on enabling storeconfigs, and I'm having a little bit of trouble. Does anyone know what user/password puppet tries connecting to activemq/stomp with? I don't see anywhere to configure that in puppet.conf, and enabling anonymous access in my activemq.xml doesn't seem to do the trick. I'm ending up with a bunch of "java.io.IOException: User name or password is invalid" in my activemq log
[2011/10/27 20:09:05] <walkeran_lappy> TheDigitalNinja: What are you trying to do? "puppetd -t" will run the agent in non-daemonized mode, with output going to stdout
[2011/10/27 20:10:07] <TheDigitalNinja> i'm just trying to force puppet to run on a server in my server setup script.
[2011/10/27 20:10:09] @ sako joined channel #puppet
[2011/10/27 20:10:32] <walkeran_lappy> Yeah, puppetd -t would do the trick
[2011/10/27 20:11:07] <walkeran_lappy> Or, if you are using 2.6 or up, you could do "puppet agent -t" as puppetd will be deprecated at some point in the future
[2011/10/27 20:11:36] <walkeran_lappy> sorry.. 2.7 or up
